Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 550 to 600 lbs mostly steady, 601 to 700 lbs steady to 3.00 lower, 701 to 750 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower, 751 to 950 lbs steady except for 800 to 850 lbs 5.00 to 6.00 higher. Heifers 550 to 600 lbs and 700 to 750 lbs mostly steady, 601 to 650 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 lower with other weight classes of heifers not well compared. Very good demand for grass type cattle again this week. Good demand for feeding type cattle. Many loads and packages of home raised cattle offered as well as several strings of backgrounded cattle. Flesh varied, less flesh overall than seen last week. Quality mostly average to attractive and cattle had cleaner hides today, pens have frozen up again. An active market seen for this offering. About 1100 head of cancellations due to snow and icy roads yet again this week. Weather remains colder than normal for this time of year, lots of snow around which has not really started to melt. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, March 29.
