Compared to last week: steers 550 to 600 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 lower, 601 to 650 lbs not well compared, 651 to 800 lbs 2.00 to 6.00 higher, 801 to 900 lbs mostly steady, 901 to 950 lbs 1.00 to 2.00 higher. Heifers 500 to 550 lbs mostly steady, 551 to 650 lbs steady to 3.00 higher, 651 to 700 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 lower, 701 to 750 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for another large offering of feeder cattle this week. Many loads and packages offered, as well as a few consignments of replacement quality heifers. Similar quality to last week, form plain to attractive. Flesh varied, from light to moderate plus with some heavy flesh seen at times. Some tag on the cattle as lot conditions are getting dirty. An active market for this offering with slightly less enthusiasm than last week. More winter weather in the area this week with several storms coming on within days of each other bringing more snow and wind, producers are busy digging out between storms and keeping cattle fed and bedded. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, March 15, expecting another large run.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
