Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to Saturday: a much larger offering than Saturday with best test on steers 750 to 850 lbs and 900 to 950 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher. Best test on heifers 600 to 650 lbs mostly steady, other weight classes of heifers not well compared. Good to very good demand for this large offering which featured many load lots, including quite a few multiple loads from the same owner, and many packages as well. Several consignments of replacement quality heifers also offered and met with very good demand. Varied flesh today with more flesh overall than seen on Saturday. Quality ranged from plain to attractive. An active market despite another day of bad weather, the market grew stronger throughout the day. More snow and wind yesterday and today causing bad roads and visibility again this week, about 1500 head of cancellations today due to weather. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, March 8, expecting a very large run of feeders.
