Compared to last week: steer calves 550 to 650 lbs mostly steady, 651 to 800 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower. Heifers calves 450 to 700 lbs 4.00 to 8.00 lower. Too few yearlings these last two weeks for an accurate trend. Another large calf offering this week featuring many loads and packages of home raised calves. Moderate to good demand for calves carrying some flesh, good to very good demand for greener calves, especially black hides which could fit grass programs. Like last week, flesh varied, from light to some heavy. More colored cattle in the offering today, quality similar to last week, from plain to attractive. Moderate to active market activity today. More storms and snow to the south in Nebraska, this winter seems to have been one snowstorm after another in some parts, somewhat limiting where cattle can be sent at times. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, January 25.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
