Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to Saturday: steers 500 to 550 lbs 5.00 to 8.00 higher, 551 to 600 lbs and 701 to 750 lbs mostly steady, 601 to 700 lbs and 751 to 800 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Heifers 500 to 600 lbs mostly steady, 601 to 700 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 higher. A large calf offering today featuring many packages and loads of home raised cattle. A light yearling offering with just a handful of loads of heifers. Good to very good demand for calves with cattle which could fit into summer grass programs, especially black hided calves, seeing the best demand. Flesh ranged from light to heavy today with less overall flesh than seen on Saturday. Quality varied, from plain to attractive, less colored cattle than on Saturday. An active market seen for this offering. Weather in the area has been decent this week except for some fog, temps have been in the 20's giving cattle and their caretakers a chance to recover from the snow and cold of earlier. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, January 18.
