Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Today was a special Saturday calf sale. Compared to Wednesday: best test on steers 600 to 800 lbs mostly steady except 650 to 700 lbs not well compared. Best test on heifers 550 to 700 lbs mostly steady with instances up to 5.00 higher on 600 to 700 lbs. Good to very good demand for this large offering featuring many packages and loads, including several outfits selling multiple loads of same weight home raised calves. The offering included quite a few colored cattle, overall quality was mostly average to attractive. Flesh varied, more flesh overall than seen on Wednesday. A couple of consignments of unweaned calves, these see less demand. An active market with good attendance of both buyers and farmer feeders for an off sale day. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, January 11.
