Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

No feeder cattle last week due to the holidays, compared to two weeks ago: different weight classes of both steers and heifers than two weeks ago with best test on steers 600 to 650 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher and best test on heifers 550 to 600 lbs mostly steady, no yearling cattle included in today's offering. Good demand for calves today, thin fleshed, black hided calves saw very good demand. Quite a few loads and many packages on offer, the majority being home raised and average to attractive in quality. Flesh varied, from light to moderate plus with some heavy flesh at times. An active market with most of the normal crowd of buyers and farmer feeders attending. A winter storm hit the southern part of the state and into MN and IA the last couple of days dumping a couple feet of snow. This has caused travel issues as some roads are still closed and conditions are still icy and snow packed. This has been a tough winter so far for producers and livestock. Special feeder cattle sale Saturday, January 7, and regular feeder cattle sale Wednesday, January 11.
