Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Yearling cattle not well compared this week. Compared to Saturday's calf sale: steer calves 500 to 550 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 higher, 551 to 700 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 500 to 600 lbs mostly steady, 601 to 650 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 higher. Very good demand for yearlings again this week. Less yearlings on offer than last week, a handful of loads and packages available, flesh ranged from moderate to some heavy. Very good demand for calves today. Quality and preconditioning very similar to Saturday. Less flesh overall today than Saturday, with most of the calves off the cow today, about one third were weaned. An active market seen for this offering. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, December 15. This will be the final feeder cattle sale of 2021.
