Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to Wednesday: steers 450 to 550 lbs steady to 1.00 higher, 551 to 700 lbs 6.00 to 9.00 higher, 701 to 750 lbs 3.00 higher. Heifers 500 to 650 lbs 5.00 to 7.00 higher. Today was the yearly Saturday weaned and preconditioned calf sale. Many. many packages and quite a few loads made up this offering, all fully preconditioned and longtime weaned. Flesh varied quite a bit today, from light to some heavy, depending on what feedstuffs were available to producers to wean. An active market with a few less buyers than a normal weekday sale, but still plenty in the seats and eager to buy cattle. Much cooler temperatures expected for next week with much of the area seeing some snowfall today. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, December 8.
