No feeder cattle last week due to Thanksgiving, compared to two weeks ago: best test on yearling steers 1000 to 1050 lbs 5.00 higher, higher undertones noted on other weight classes of yearling steers. Best test on yearling heifers 850 to 900 lbs and 950 to 1000 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Steer calves 500 to 550 lbs and 600 to 650 lbs 8.00 to 12.00 higher with instances up to 18.00 higher on 500 to 550 lbs, 651 to 750 lbs steady to 4.00 higher. Best test on heifer calves 500 to 550 lbs and 600 to 650 lbs 3.00 to 8.00 higher. Very good demand for yearlings again this week. The featured consignment was a string of 800 steers, many other loads and packages of steers and heifers offered as well. Flesh mostly moderate to moderate plus with some heavy flesh at times. Good to very good demand for calves. Mostly packages with just a handful of loads today. Flesh varied, but mostly light to moderate plus. The majority of the calves had shots and come off the cow. An active market for both calves and yearlings. Buyers were anxious to fill pens and took all loads of yearlings when offered. The area is enjoying above normal temps this week. Special weaned and preconditioned feeder calf sale Saturday, December 4, with 5000 head expected. Regular feeder calf sale on Wednesday, December 8.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
