Compared to last week: yearlings not well compared for an accurate trend. Steer calves 450 to 500 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher, 501 to 550 and 601 to 650 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower, 551 to 600 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 450 to 500 lbs 5.00 to 9.00 higher, 501 to 650 lbs mostly steady. Very good demand for several strings and many loads of yearling steers and heifers. Similar to last week, quality on yearlings varied, from plain to attractive. Moderate to good demand for today's large calf offering. Many loads and many, many packages available. Like recent weeks, calves had various preconditioning, those without at least one round of fall shots see less demand. Flesh varied, from moderate to some heavy flesh at times. An active market on yearlings, moderate to active on calves. No feeder cattle sale next week due to the Thanksgiving holiday, there will be a bred cattle sale on Wednesday, November 24 instead of feeders. Two feeeder cattle sales the following week, regular feeder cattle sale Wednesday, December 1 and special weaned and preconditioned calf sale on Saturday, December 4.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
