Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 900 to 950 lbs steady, yearling heifers not well compared. Best test on steer calves 500 to 650 lbs steady. Best test on heifer calves 450 to 500 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 lower, 550 to 600 lbs steady. Good to very good demand for yearling cattle again this week. Varied quality on yearlings today, from plain to attractive. Many packages and loads of calves on offer today were met with good demand. Preconditioning varied again this week, calves without full preconditioning or with just spring shots see lighter demand. Mostly moderate to moderate plus flesh on calves today, more flesh overall than seen last week. A few weaned packages in today's offering, but the majority of the calves were off the cow. An active market for yearlings and moderate to active for calves with both buyers and a few farmer feeders in the seats today. The area saw some rain again today and some winter weather is expected for the next few days. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, November 17.
