Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 950 to1000 lbs steady, the rest of yearling steers and yearling heifers not well compared today. Steer calves 450 to 550 lbs mostly steady, 551 to 650 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Heifer calves 450 to 500 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 lower, 501 to 600 lbs mostly steady. Demand for yearling cattle continues to be very good as supplies dwindle every week. Several strings and loads made up the majority of today's yearlings. Flesh varied, but mostly moderate to moderate plus. Moderate to good demand today's calf offering. More flesh overall on the calves this week as many have had some creep feed. The majority off the cow with just a couple weaned consignments, weaned 40 days. Preconditioning varied but most had had at least one good round of fall shots. A moderate to active market for today's large offering with the regular crowd of buyers as well as some farmer feeders in the seats today. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, November 18.
