Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 950 to 1000 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Best test on yearling heifers 750 to 800 lbs mostly steady, 850 to 900 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower with instances up to 8.00 lower. Steer calves 400 to 450 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher, 451 to 650 lbs steady to 4.00 higher, 651 to 700 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 lower. Heifer calves 450 to 500 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 higher with instances 10.00 higher, 501 to 600 lbs steady to 2.00 higher, 601 to 650 lbs steady. Good demand for another large yearling offering this week. Several strings and many loads and packages of yearling steers and heifers offered, in flesh which ranged from light to heavy. Quality on yearlings also varied greatly today. Moderate to good demand for today's large calf offering featuring many, many packages and quite a few loads. Quality and flesh varied on calves, from plain to attractive, and flesh from light to moderate plus. A couple packages of weaned calves, weaned 30 to 59 days, but the majority was off the cow again this week. Most of the calves had at least one full round of fall shots, those without were discounted at times. An active market seen for this large offering. No feeder cattle sale next week due to Thanksgiving, the next feeder cattle sale will be Wednesday, December 2, and a special weaned calf sale on Saturday, December 5. Happy Thanksgiving!
