Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 950 to 1100 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Best test on yearling heifers 900 to 950 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 lower. Steer calves 400 to 600 lbs mostly steady with instances 3.00 lower on 550 to 600 lbs, 601 to 650 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher. Heifer calves 450 to 600 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher. Good demand for today's yearling offering. Quality varied again this week, from plain to attractive. More flesh overall on this weeks' yearlings with the majority out of yards, one consignment still coming off grass in light to moderate flesh. Moderate to good demand for today's calf offering. The majority of the calves came in packages today with just a couple loads. Flesh more varied than last week, from light to moderate plus. As with last week, most of the calves had full preconditioning and those without were discounted at times. All were off the cow and quality was average to attractive. An active market seen for today's offering. The temperatures have been very warm this week which has gotten rid of the snow and is helping to dry things out. There is still some corn left to be harvested but harvest has started up again with the better weather. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, November 11.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
