Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 850 to 950 lbs mostly steady, 1050 to 1100 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower. Yearling heifers not well compared today. Calves too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate trend, higher undertones noted on calves. Good demand for today's yearling offering consisting of several strings and many loads and packages. More flesh on yearlings this week as there were fewer off grass and more yard cattle, most in moderate to moderate plus flesh with some heavy flesh at times. Quality varied quite a bit today, from plain to attractive. Moderate to good demand for many packages and a couple loads of average to attractive quality calves today. All calves off the cow and most had full preconditioning, those without were discounted, especially those with just a 7 way shot. A moderate to active market seen for this offering with both buyers and some farmer feeders in the seats. Warmer temperatures are predicted for the rest of the week and into next week which will create some muddy road and lot conditions. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, November 4.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
