Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 550 to 699 lbs steady to 3.00 higher with instances up to 9.00 higher on 650 to 699 lbs, 700 to 749 lbs not well compared, 750 to 799 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 higher. Heifers 450 to 499 lbs and 550 to 599 lbs mostly steady with other weight classes of heifers not well compared. Good demand for lots of packages and a handful of loads of both home raised and back grounded cattle which made up today's offering with best demand seen for cattle suitable for grass programs or back grounding, especially black hided load lots. Flesh varied, but less flesh overall than seen last week. Quality ranged from plain to attractive, quite a few colored cattle again this week. Some tag but cattle were much cleaner than expected with the mud and dreary weather. An active market seen for the offering. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, February 16.
