Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steers 600 to 649 lbs and 700 to 749 lbs 9.00 to 10.00 higher with instances 15.00 higher. Best test on heifers 450 to 499 lbs, 600 to 649 lbs, and 700 to 749 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for today's offering of many loads and packages of both backgrounded and home raised cattle. All classes to choose from, both grass and finishing types and quite a few colored cattle in varied flesh, but more flesh overall than last week. Some tag on the cattle but really not as bad as expected with the way yards have gotten in the nice weather. An active market with both buyers and farmer feeders in the seats. Nice weather to continue into next week and keep temperatures above normal for this time of year. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, February 9.
