Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 550 to 599 and 650 to 699 lbs mostly steady, 600 to 649 lbs and 700 to 749 lbs 4.00 to 7.00 higher, 750 to 799 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 lower. Heifers 550 to 599 lbs mostly steady and 650 to 699 lbs 4.00 lower with instances up to 10.00 lower, other weight classes not well compared. A large offering today featuring many packages, loads, and multiple loads of cattle, the majority of these being home raised. Very good demand for cattle to grass or background, especially those with black hides selling in loads. Good demand for finishing types depending on flesh and hide color, less flesh overall and less colored cattle than last week. Quality was quite attractive and most of the cattle were well vaccinated and long time weaned. Hides were pretty clean today as yards have frozen again. An active market seen for this offering. Temperatures back in the 40's for next week, quite a bit warmer than what one would expect for this area in February. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, February 23.
