Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 900 to 999 lbs and 1050 to 1099 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 lower with instances up to 20.00 lower. Best test on yearling heifers 800 to 849 lbs mostly steady, 850 to 899 lbs steady to 5.00 lower. Best test on steer calves 500 to 549 and 600 to 649 lbs mostly steady. Best test on heifer calves 500 to 549 mostly steady. Moderate demand for yearlings today. Another large offering of strings and loads including the same family outfit selling the last couple weeks. This is where similarities to last week ended. Yearlings today carried more flesh and tag and were less attractive in quality than last weeks. Buyers picked through loads more often instead of taking all loads of the same cut which they did more frequently last week. Moderate demand for calves which sold entirely in packages. Quite a few colored cattle, which continue to be discounted at times. Calves without all their shots also see discounts at times. Calf quality less attractive overall than last week. A moderate market with a few less of the normal buyers and farmer feeders in the seats. The futures ended up on the positive side again today and the cattle on feed report was friendlier than expected. No sale next week due to Thanksgiving, next feeder cattle sale is Friday, December 1. Happy Thanksgiving!

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
