Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
No feeder cattle last week due to Thanksgiving, compared to two weeks ago: best test on yearling steers 900 to 999 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 higher, 1000 to 1049 lbs mostly steady. A lighter test on calves this week with best test on steers 500 to 549 lbs 5.00 to 8.00 higher and 600 to 649 lbs mostly steady with instances up to 6.00 higher. Best test on heifer calves 500 to 549 lbs mostly steady. Good demand for yearlings today. Several strings and a handful of packages made up the yearling offering. More attractive quality and cleaner hides than two weeks ago. Moderate demand for calves, most selling in packages. Quite a few colored hides and calves without all their shots, this continues to cause larger price spreads. All calves came off the cow, flesh was mostly light to moderate. A moderate to active market seen for this offering. Another day of losses on the board with feeder cattle losing over 5.00. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, December 8.
