Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 950 to 999 lbs mostly steady with instances up to 7.00 higher. Best test on yearling heifers 850 to 899 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 lower. Best test on steer calves 450 to 549 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 lower, 550 to 599 3.00 to 4.00 lower. Best test on heifer calves 450 to 499 lbs mostly steady, 500 to 599 lbs 10.00 lower. Good to very good demand for another large offering yearlings this week, selling mostly in strings and loads including a string of 1400 steers from the same family outfit as last week. A few consignments still coming off grass but more flesh seen on these than last week. Moderate to good demand for calves depending on preconditioning and hide color which is reflected by wide price spreads. All calves were home raised and off the cow today, flesh varied from light to some heavy flesh on calves that had seen some creep feed. An active market on yearlings, moderate to active on calves. Both buyers and farmer feeders in the seats today. After being sharply lower yesterday on both live and feeder cattle, the board showed some progress in the other direction today but there has been too much uncertainty the last few weeks to restore the confidence seen earlier this fall. Harvest is still in progress in this area. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, November 17.
