Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 850 to 899 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 higher, 950 to 999 lbs mostly steady. Best test on yearling heifers 800 to 849 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for yearlings today. Lots of loads and strings including a string of 1200 green steers off grass. Flesh ranged from light to moderate plus with some heavy flesh at times, cattle came both off grass and out of yards with some tag seen due to the weather last week. Moderate to good demand for calves today depending again this week on hide color and shot records. A handful of loads offered but most of the calves sold in packages. All were off the cow and home raised. Some calves showed stress after going through the weather last week. An active market seen for yearlings, moderate to active for calves. Still quite a bit of crop out in the country and producers are working to get harvest completed. The weather has turned warmer again giving everyone a chance to get some more fall work done. Next feeder cattle sale is November 10.
