Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 850 to 899 lbs and 950 to 999 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 lower, 900 to 949 lbs 6.00 to10.00 lower. Yearling heifers not well compared. Moderate to good demand for yearlings today. Mostly strings and loads off grass this week, some steers had been in the yard a couple weeks. Quality varied again this week, from plain to attractive. A lighter offering of calves this week with cancellations due to the winter weather the area received the last few days. An accurate price trend on calves could not be established. Moderate demand for calves with the weather playing a large part in this. As seen last week, there are price spreads caused by lack of shots and hide color at times. All calves were off the cow. Much of the region saw their first snow and cold temperatures are following for the next few days, taking on a bawling calf is a challenge most don't have the desire to take on. Futures ended on a positive note today. A moderate to active market for this offering. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, November 3.
