Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

No sale last week due to Thanksgiving. Compared to two weeks ago: best test on yearling steers 900 to 950 lbs mostly steady, other yearlings not well compared. Steer calves 500 to 700 lbs 6.00 to 10.00 higher with instances up to 15.00 higher. Heifer calves 500 to 650 lbs 7.00 to 12.00 higher. Very good demand for a couple strings of steers and a string of spayed heifers which made up today's yearling offering. Overall flesh on yearlings mostly moderate plus. Very good demand for calves today. A handful of loads and many packages offered, both weaned and off the cow. The majority of the calves had all their shots, or at least a full round of fall shots and quality was mostly attractive. An active market with many buyers and some farmer feeders in the seats and eager to get cattle bought. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, December 10.
