Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 850 to 900 lbs 4.00 higher. Best test on steer calves 550 to 650 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower with other weight classes of steer calves not well compared. Best test on heifer calves 450 to 500 lbs 5.00 to 8.00 lower, 501 to 650 lbs steady to 2.00 lower. Very good demand for a couple strings of yearling steers and several packages of yearling heifers, most of these tested opens. Most of the yearlings in moderate to moderate plus flesh. Good demand for calves today. Mostly packages of calves offered with just a couple loads. Flesh varied quite a bit today, from light to some heavy flesh on calves. Quality varied as well, from plain to attractive, less attractive overall quality than seen last week. The majority of the calves had had their shots. An active market with both buyers a nd farmer feeders attending the sale today. A winter storm in the south and eastern part of the state could make some difficult travel conditions today. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, December 17. This will be the final feeder cattle sale of 2021.
