Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 900 to 950 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 higher with other yearlings not well compared. Steer calves 450 to 650 lbs 10.00 higher except 500 to 550 lbs not well compared, 651 to 700 lbs 3.00 higher. Heifer calves 500 to 600 lbs 6.00 to 10.00 higher, 601 to 650 lbs 3.00 higher. Very good demand for yearling cattle again this week. Several strings of steers offered, as well as a couple loads and packages of heifers, in mostly moderate to moderate plus flesh. Good demand for calves this week. Calf quality more attractive than last week and most of the calves today had their shots. Flesh varied, from moderate to moderate plus with some heavy flesh at times. An active market for this offering, many buyers trying to finish up orders before the holiday week. Harvest is finished up in this area and more farmer feeders are ready to get calves in. No feeder cattle sale next week due to Thanksgiving, next feeder cattle sale is Friday, December 3.
