Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 950 to 1050 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 lower. Best test on steer calves 450 to 650 lbs 4.00 to 8.00 lower except 500 to 550 lbs not well compared. Best test on heifer calves 500 to 550 lbs mostly steady with other weight classes of heifer calves and yearling heifers not well compared. Good to very good demand for several stings of yearling steers and a string of yearling heifers offered today, some of these still coming off grass. Flesh varied, but mostly moderate plus overall. Moderate to good demand for calves today. Most calves sold in packages and had shots, those without shots or all their shots see light demand and discounted prices. Calf quality varied today, many plain to average calves and multicolored packages on offer. An active market on yearlings, moderate to active on calves. Very windy conditions continued today and some areas saw some blizzard conditions. Travel, especially for trucks, was limited by the weather. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, November 19.
