Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: yearling cattle not well compared. Best test on steer calves 500 to 600 lbs mostly steady with instances up to 5.00 higher. Best test on heifer calves 500 to 550 mostly steady. Good demand for today's yearling offering of strings and loads. Yearlings mostly plain to average in quality and in moderate plus to heavy flesh. Moderate demand for today's calf offering featuring mostly packages and just a few loads. Calves varied in quality, from plain to attractive. The majority were off the cow, but there were a few consignments of weaned calves, weaned about 45 days. Most had preconditioning and those without at least one full round of shots in the fall are very met with light demand. A moderate to active market with both order buyers and farmer feeders in the seats today. No feeder cattle sale next week due to Thanksgiving, the next feeder cattle sale will be Friday, December 4.
