Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 850 to 900 lbs and 1000 to 1050 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Yearling heifers not well compared today. Steer calves 450 to 550 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher, 551 to 700 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 450 to 600 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for a couple strings and a hand full of loads of attractive quality steers and spayed heifers which made up today's yearling offering. The market was very active on these with buyers taking multiple loads when offered. Flesh on yearlings mostly moderate to moderate plus. Moderate to good demand for today's large calf offering. Unlike last week, most calves today had preconditioning, or at least a full round of shots in the fall. The majority were off the cow today, however, there were a couple weaned packages, weaned about 45 days. Calves mostly average to attractive in quality, overall quality was more attractive than last week. An active market for calves with both order buyers and a couple farmer feeders in the seats. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, November 20.
