Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week best test on steers from 450 lbs to 549 lbs would be 6.00 to 10.00 higher, steers from 850 lbs to1050 lbs were steady to 4.00 higher, best test on heifers 350 lbs to 499 lbs and 800 lbs to 1049 lbs were steady to 4.00 higher. Other weight classes were to lightly tested to make a market comparison. Big run of yearlings along with a couple thousand calves for to days auction. Good to very good demand for todays yearlings with most of the yearlings coming off grass. Several strings of reputation yearlings offered buyers the opportunity to purchase multiple loads of one owner cattle . Plenty of part loads and packages of tested open replacement heifers gave buyers the opportunity to put part loads and packages together. Flesh ranged from light flesh to a few moderate plus coming out of a grow yard. A good test on the spring born calves that were attractive for quality and fully vaccinated. Calves were met with a more moderate demand as many feeders are busy with fall harvest and not ready to deal with a bawling calf. Lots of byers in the seats competing with the internet buyers today. The area remains dry and dusty, with temperatures fluctuating daily making for health concerns for a bawling calf. Mild and dry conditions are forecast for the area for the next week and no rain in the forecast. Next feeder sale is scheduled for Friday, October 11, 2024.
