Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to two weeks ago: best test on steers 800 lbs to 849 lbs were steady to 4.00 higher, steers from 950 lbs to 999 lbs were 1.00 to 3.00 higher, best test on heifers 800 lbs to 999 lbs were steady to 4.00 higher, other weight classes were to lightly tested to make a market comparison. A big run of yearlings for todays 77th anniversary sale along with several consignments of spring born calves. Good to very good demand for todays yearling offering. Several strings of steers and spayed heifers along with tested open replacement heifers made up the majority of todays offering, with most cattle coming off grass. Flesh condition ranged from light flesh to moderate plus. Several consignments of spring born calves were meet with moderate demand as most operators are not ready to deal with a bawling calf. Usual group of order buyers and a few farmer feeders were competing with internet buyers for today offering. Hot and dry conditions continue to plague the area. Next feeder sale is scheduled for October 4, 2024. It will be a special all breed calf, yearling and weigh up sale.
