Compared to two weeks ago; best test on steers 800 lbs to 899 lbs were steady to 2.00 higher, best test on heifers were 750lbs to 799 lbs were steady to 6.00 higher, heifers from 800 lbs to 999 lbs were steady to 2.00 higher, other weight classes were to lightly tested to make a market comparison, although higher undertones across all classes and weight categories would be noted. Several consignments offered buyers the opportunity to purchase multiple loads of one owner cattle. Loads and packages of tested open heifers were met with good demand. Some plainer cattle in today offering were met with a more moderate demand. It was an active market with the usual group of order buyers and fa few farmer feeder competing with internet buyers. Most of the cattle were light to moderate fleshed and coming off grass, and some moderate plus fleshed cattle coming out of grow yards. The bulk of todays sale consisted of several strings of spayed heifers along with lots of part loads and packages of tested open heifers, there were several consignments of fall calves and yearling steer off grass. Next feeder sale will be the 77th Anniversary sale Friday, September 27th, expecting a large run of feeder cattle.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
