Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers from 400 lbs to 449 lbs were 10.00 to 15.00 higher, steers from 451 lbs to 499 lbs were steady to 4.00 lower, steers from 500 lbs to 649 lbs were steady to instances of 3.00 higher, steers from 850 lbs to 949 lbs were mostly steady , steers from 950 lbs to 999 lbs were 2.00 to 4.00 lower; Heifers from 350 lbs to 499 lbs were 5.00 to 15.00 higher, 950 lbs to 999 lbs were steady to 2.00 lower. An active market with lots of order buyers and a few farmer feeders competing with internet buyers. Good to very good demand for today large offering of yearlings, steers off grass, spayed heifers and tested open heifers off grass. Yearlings ranged from attractive to plain for quality. Flesh condition ranged from light fleshed to moderate. Several strings of yearlings were offered in multiple loads in the same sort. All calves were off the cow, most were fully vaccinated and flesh was mostly light to moderate. Wide price spreads in calves depending on vaccination programs and hide color. Internet buyers procured a large percentage of todays calf offering. Warm and dry conditions continue to be wide spread in the area. Our thoughts and support goes out to fellow producers dealing with wild fires or flooding conditions caused by a hurricane. Next feeder sale is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct 16th.
