Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last Friday: Feeder steers from 400 lbs to 499 lbs were 8.00 to 10.00 higher, steers from 500 lbs to 549 lbs were steady to 2.00 lower, 550 lbs to 599 lbs were 3.00 to 5.00 higher, steers from 600 lbs to 649 lbs were 8.00 to 10.00 higher. Heifers from 400 lbs to 449 lbs were steady, heifers from 450 lbs to 499 lbs were 10.00 to 12.00 lower, heifers from 500 lbs to 549 lbs were 3.00 to 5.00 lower, heifers from 550 lbs to 599 lbs were steady to 4.00 higher, no other comparisons available. A nice offering of yearlings to go with a large run of spring born calves for todays sale. Several strings of yearlings from reputation producers were meet with good demand. A large offering of calves with several long strings from reputation producers offered buyers the opportunity to put multiple loads together. The bulk of todays yearlings were light fleshed coming off grass, with a few moderate plus coming out of a grow yard. Wide variation in calf prices today depending on hide color and vaccination programs. Most of the calves were right off the cow, had spring and fall vaccinations, clean haired and attractive for quality. Good to very good demand for todays calves, lesser demand for the yearlings in todays sale. A large crowd of buyers competing with internet buyers made for a fairly active market. Mild weather in the area has been beneficial for livestock and has allowed farmers and ranchers to get most of their work done. Todays on feed report will be considered neutral as placements and slaughter levels came in about as expected. Maybe the commodity fun managers will realize the percentage of the heifers being placed on feed and the continued reduction of beef cows in the country.
