What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
Compared to two weeks ago: feeder steers from 400 lbs to 499 lbs were steady to 4.00 lower, steers from 500 lbs to 549 lbs were steady to 5.00 higher, steers from 550 lbs to 649 lbs were generally 8.00 to 12.00 lower, heifers from 400 lbs to 599 lbs were steady to 8.00 higher, heifers from 600 lbs to 649 lbs were mostly 10.00 to 12.00 lower, no other comparisons available. A nice offering of yearlings to go with a large run of spring born calves for todays sale. Several strings of yearlings from reputation producers were met with good demand. An active market on both calves and yearlings for todays sale. Most of todays yearlings were light fleshed coming off grass, with a few moderate plus coming out of grow yards. Wide variation in calf prices today depending on hid color and vaccination programs. Most of the calves were right off the cow and had both spring and fall vaccinations. Best demand for full loads of black hided calves that were fully vaccinated. A large crowd of buyers competing with internet buyers made for a competitive market at todays sale. Next feeder sale will be Friday, December 8, 2023, featuring a weaned calf special.
