Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to last Friday: Steers from 400 lbs to 449 lbs were mostly steady, steers from 450 lbs to 649 were 10.00 to 15.00 lower, steers from 650 lbs to 699 were 5.00 to 7.00 lower; Heifers from 400 lbs to 599 lbs were gernerally 10.00 to 12.00 lower with instances of 15.00 lower. N o other comparisons available. A limited supply of yearling due to declining market conditions at todays sale. Yearling flesh conditions ranged from light fleshed coming off grass to moderate fleshed coming out of grow yards were met with fair demand. There was a more active market on the calves as they made up the bulk of todays sale. Most of the calves were light fleshed, right off the cow and had spring and fall vaccinations , were clean haired and attractive for quality. Lots of buyers in the seats competing with internet buyers made for an active market. Several long stings with plenty of part loads and packages aloud buyers to put loads together. The down word spiral in the futures market again this week has made buyers more cautious. Next feeder sale will be Friday, November 17th.
