Compared to last Friday: Steers from 400 lbs to 449 lbs were 6.00 to 7.00 lower, steers from 450 lbs to 499 lbs were 10.00 to 15.00 higher, steers from 500 lbs to 599 lbs were 4.00 to 6.00 higher, steers from 600 lbs to 649 lbs were 8.00 to 12.00 higher, steers from 800 lbs to 849 lbs were 4.00 to 6.00 lower, steers from 900 lbs to 940 lbs were 12.00 to 15.00 higher; heifers from 400 lbs to 549 lbs were 15.00 to 18.00 higher, heifers from 550 lbs to 599 lbs were 5.00 to 7.00 higher. No other comparisons available. Good to very good demand for todays large offering of yearlings and spring born calves. The bulk of todays yearlings were plainer for quality than last week. Flesh condition on the yearlings ranged from light fleshed condition coming off grass to moderate plus coming out of a grow yard. Market not as active today on the yearlings as it has been in previous sales. Lots of buyer interest in todays offering of spring born calves. Most of the calves were light fleshed and right off the cow, had spring and fall vaccinations, were clean hired and attractive for quality. Lots of buyers in the seats competing with internet buyers made for an active market. More interest in the calves today than last week as weather conditions have turned more favorable for most backgrounding lots to wean calves. Mild weather this past week has helped advance the progress of fall harvest and the movement of cattle. Next sale will be Friday, November 10, 2023 expecting a large run of calves and yearlings.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
