Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
Compared to last Friday: Steer calves from 400 lbs to 549 lbs ranged from 10.00 to 20.00 lower, steers from 550 lbs to 649 lbs were 6.00 to 10.00 lower, yearling steers from 900 lbs to 949 lbs were 15.00 to 20.00 lower. Heifer calves from 400 lbs to 549 lbs were 15.00 to 20.00 lower, heifers from 550 lbs to 599 lbs and 700 lbs to 749 lbs were 4.00 to 6.00 lower, yearling heifers from 900 lbs to 949 lbs were 3.00 to 4.00 lower. An active market as the number of yearling available for purchase continue to dwindle week after week. Yearlings were from light fleshed coming off grass to moderate plus backgrounded cattle. A good demand for todays spring born calves, most had spring and fall vaccinations and were right off the cow. Continue to see a large price range within their respective weight groups, due to vaccinations, hide color, and how many in the consignment. Majority of the calves were light fleshed to moderate flesh condition. House full of buyers with several farmer feeders, order byers competing with the internet buyers to get cattle purchased. Icey road conditions in the area caused a few cancellations for todays sale. The next feeder sale will be a special black hided calf sale on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.
