Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last Friday: Steers from 450 lbs to 499 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 higher, steers from 500 lbs to 549 lbs were 2.00 to 4.00 lower, steers from 550 lbs to 599 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 higher, steers from 600 lbs to 649 lbs were steady to 2.00 higher, steers from 650 lbs to 699 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 higher; Heifers from 400 lbs to 549 lbs were 2.00 to 4.00 higher, heifers from 550 lbs to 649 lbs were steady to 6.00 higher. Good to very good demand for both yearling and calves today. A very active market on all classes of cattle today with lots of buyers in the seats competing with internet buyers. Most of the calves were fully pre-conditioned, attractive for quality, clean with little to no tag. Calves were light fleshed, right off the cow and had been running on dry pasture conditions. The recent cold blustery conditions in the area has greened the calves up. Icy conditions remain out in the country side. The Next feeder sale will be in two weeks, Dec 2, 2022. Happy Thanksgiving.
