Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last feeder sale two weeks ago: steers from 450 lbs to 649 lbs were 4.00 to 6.00 higher, except the 550 lbs to 599 lbs steers were steady to 2.00 lower, 650 lbs to 699 lbs were mostly 2.00 to 4.00 lower; heifers from 400 lbs to 649 lbs were mostly 4.00 to 8.00 higher, instances 10.00 higher, yearling heifers from 800 lbs to 949 lbs were dollars higher, instances 10.00 to 12.00 higher. Good to very good demand for todays large offering of yearlings and calves. Very active market on all classes of cattle with lots of buyers in the seats competing with internet buyers. High winds and cold temperatures hampered road conditions for people that ventured outside today. Most of todays offering was off grass, clean haired and attractive for quality, calves were fully pre-conditioned with at least two rounds of vaccinations, mostly non-implanted and right off the cow. Flesh condition ranged from light flesh to medium flesh. Next feeder sale will be a special weaned and pre-conditioned calf sale on Friday, December 9th. Stay warm and enjoy some beef.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
