Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last Friday: Steers from 450 lbs to 499 lbs were 2.00 to 3.00 lower, steers from 500 lbs to 549 lbs were steady to 4.00 higher, steers from 550 lbs to 699 lbs were 6.00 to 8.00 lower; Heifers from 400 lbs to 449 lbs were steady, heifers from 450 lbs to 499 lbs were 4.00 to 6.00 lower, heifers from 500 lbs to 599 lbs were steady to 2.00 higher, no other comparisons available. Very active market on all classes of cattle today with lots of buyers in the seats competing with buyers on the internet. Icey roads and winter weather in the area caused some cancellations for todays sale. Most of the calves today were fully pre-conditioned, attractive for quality, clean with little to no tag. Calves were light fleshed right off the cow and had been running on dry pasture conditions. Next feeder sale will be Friday , November 18th, expecting a large run of calves and yearlings.
