Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to last Friday's sale: Steers calves from 350# to 399# were $6.00 to $10.00 higher, 400# to $499 were $4.00 to $6.00 lower with instances of $10.00 lower, 500# to 599# were steady with $2.00 higher, 600# to 649# were $2.00 to $4.00 lower; Heifer calves from 400# to 499# were $4.00 to $8.00 lower, 500# to 549# were steady to $2.00 higher, 550# to 599# were $6.00 to $10.00 lower. No other comparisons were available. There was good demand and a fairly active market on the calves today. The calves were fully preconditioned and right off the cow, light fleshed and attractive for quality. Several long strings from reputation ranches offered buyers the opportunity to purchase full loads or multiple loads of one owner cattle. Lots of part loads and packages available today as well. Just a few loads of yearlings, mostly packages in todays sale. Better demand for the full loads of good quality cattle today than for the part loads and packages.
