Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to last Friday's sale: Steer calves from 350# to 399# were steady, 400# to 499# were mostly $8.00 to $10.00 were lower with instances of $12.00 lower, 450# to 499# were $3.00 to $4.00 higher, 500# to 549# were $4.00 to $6.00 lower, 550# to 699# were $2.00 to $5.00 higher. Heifer calves 400# to 599# were generally $4.00 to $6.00 higher. No other comparisons available. Good demand and a fairly active market on the calves today. Calves were fully preconditioned and right off the cow, light fleshed and attractive for quality. Several long strings from reputation ranchers ( up to 1200 head per consignment) offered buyers the opportunity to purchase multiple loads of one owner cattle. Better demand for the full loads of good quality cattle today than for the part loads and packages. Several consignments of reputation replacement heifers were well received and brought a nice premium when compared to the feeder heifers. A very active market on several consignments of yearlings coming off grass. Next feeder sale will be Friday, November 12th, expecting a large run of high quality yearlings and calves.
