Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to last Friday's sale: steer calves from 400# to 649# were mostly $2.00 to $4.00 lower with instances of $6.00 lower, Heifer calves from 450# to 599# were generally steady to $4.00 lower. No other comparisons were available. A good crowd in attendance for today's sale with buyers not as aggressive as last week, still a fairly active market. Several strings of calves from reputation ranches along with part loads and packages were available for todays calf sale. A nice offering of yearlings available for today's sale were meet with good demand. Yearling cattle were straight off grass and most were light fleshed, a few in moderate flesh condition. The majority of the calves were fully preconditioned, straight off the cow, in light flesh condition and attractive for quality. A couple of consignments of weaned calves were available for todays sale also. On feed report this afternoon showed a few less cattle placed in feed yards than anticipated. The cash fat cattle market is still stuck in the same old rut it has been in for 6 - 8 weeks. Approximately 1500 calves were unable to get in for today's sale due to some muddy roads in the area. The next feeder sale will be next Wednesday, October 27th. Expecting a large run of fancy black hided calves. Stay safe and Eat Beef!
