Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week; Steer calves 400-450 lbs were sharply higher and 450-550 lbs sold 8.00-16.00 higher while 550-600 lbs were 2.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold 5.00 higher and 650-700 lbs were 12.00 lower. Heifer calves 400-500 lbs were 19.00 higher on smaller numbers and 550-600 lbs sold sharply lower. Feeder heifers 600-800 sold 3.00-6.00 lower with exception of 650-700 being sharply lower and 800-850 lbs selling steady. Trade was slow with moderate demand on smaller numbers. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 3.00 lower, instances 7.00 higher and slaughter cows were 5.00-6.00 higher, instances 9.00 lower. Market was unsteady with excellent buyer attendance. Happy Easter and remember the reason for the season!
