Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale: Steer calves 400-450 lbs and 550-600 lbs were sharply lower while 450-550 lbs sold 3.00-11.00 lower . Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold sharply higher and 650-700 lbs were 13.00 lower. Heifer calves 550-600 lbs sold sharply higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs were 4.00 higher and 700-750 lbs sold 8.00 lower. Trade was very slow with light demand on larger numbers. Slaughter cows sold steady to 3.00 higher instances 12.00 higher and slaughter bulls were 7.00-10.00 higher. Market was unsteady with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
