Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves 350-400 lbs sold 2.00 higher and 400-450 lbs were 15.00 higher while 450-500 lbs sold 8.00 lower and 500-600 lbs were 17.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs sold 11.00 higher and 750-800 lbs were 5.00 lower. Heifer calves 350-450 lbs were 2.00-10.00 higher and 450-550 lbs sold sharply lower on lower numbers while 550-600 lbs were sharply higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs sold 14.00 higher while 650-850 lbs were steady to 4.00 higher. Trade was moderate on smaller numbers with good demand. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 2.00 higher and slaughter cows were 2.00-4.00 higher. Market was steady with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
