Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves 300-350 lbs were steady while 350-400 lbs and 450-500 lbs were 20.00 higher. 400-450 lbs steers sold 10.00 higher with 500-600 lbs being 8.00-11.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold steady and 650-750 lbs were 11.00- 13.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-350 lbs were 5.00 lower and 350-400 lbs sold sharply higher while 400-500 lbs were 3.00-8.00 lower and 500-600 lbs held steady to 5.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs sold sharply higher and 650-750 lbs were 6.00-11.00 higher. Trade was moderate to active with good demand on larger numbers, Slaughter cows were sharply higher on smaller numbers and slaughter bulls sold sharply higher also with small numbers. Market was moderately active with excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
