Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves 350-500 lbs were 10.00-14.00 lower while 500-550 lbs were sharply lower and 550-600 lbs were 6.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs sold 2.00-7.00 lower and 700-750 lbs were 2.00 higher. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs sold 6.00 lower and 400-600lbs were 2.00-8.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs sold 17.00 lower and 650-700 lbs were 5.00 lower while 700-750 lbs sold steady to 1.00 higher. Trade was moderate to slow with moderate demand on larger numbers .Slaughter cows and slaughter bulls had insufficient numbers last week to compare . Market was moderate with excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
